This epidemic has different names depending on which country you live in. Here in the UK it is called “Walting” in America it is called “Stolen Valor” What is it? It is people pretending to have served in the military. These people do it for a number of reasons. Some do it to attract women through dating websites and others do it for monetary gain, like begging or convincing vulnerable women in to handing over money. These people even turn up at military parades wearing medals and military clothing to try and convince genuine soldiers they have served. Sadly a lot of them lack even the basic military knowledge to even carry off a conversation and are often found out and begin digging themselves a deeper whole. I think social websites like facebook have brought this to rapid increase because it gives these people a platform and at the same time anonymity if it goes wrong. In America it is a crime and people who impersonate military personnel or wear medals and insignia to which they are not entitled can be charged, that at the moment is not the case in the UK but if this epidemic continues I can see a similar law being introduced here.

In the meantime enjoy these pictures from real soldiers from 12 Regiment Royal Artillery my old Regiment
